MBA@UNC Graduates Experience Exceptional Outcomes

MBA@UNC, the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School's pioneering online MBA program, is creating transformative results for its students and graduates. Since launching in 2011, 100 percent of the students from its first cohort have either graduated or are still enrolled. Strong student-faculty connections, high retention and career success are just a few of the program's signature hallmarks.

"The program has certainly helped me in terms of career development," says Carlo Pedrazzini of Lockheed Martin. "It also helped me to prepare to transition from being an individual contributor at my company to a leadership role."

Designed to deliver the same rigor and quality of UNC Kenan-Flagler's on-campus MBA programs in an online format, MBA@UNC provides a positive and measurable return on investment for its students. Before completing their MBA, 71 percent of the program's recent graduates experienced a career progression.

  • Within its first class of July 2013 graduates, 67 percent of students received an internal promotion or job change to a new employer before graduation.
  • Of those who graduated in October 2013, 75 percent received internal promotions at their companies before graduation. Three MBA@UNC alumni received not just one, but two promotions while pursuing their degree.

With a convenient online platform, MBA@UNC provides the flexibility and access working professionals need to earn their MBA from wherever they are in the world.

"When we announced our plans for MBA@UNC, we pledged that our students, curriculum and faculty would be the same quality as our on-campus programs, and we have fulfilled that commitment," says Doug Shackelford, MBA@UNC associate dean and the Meade H. Willis Distinguished Professor of Taxation at UNC Kenan-Flagler. "The only difference—how we provide that education—means that we are serving people for whom coming to Chapel Hill or another world-class campus was not an option."

Using an innovative technology platform, UNC Kenan-Flagler professors teach live online classes that are based on the rigorous curriculum of the residential MBA program. Courses are delivered through an advanced online learning platform that includes original faculty-created videos, self-paced lectures, in-depth case studies and collaborative group projects.

"The faculty are very accessible and supportive," says recent graduate Rajiv Sandhar, a project manager for American Express. "And so are my fellow students! Over the course of the program, we developed very strong bonds. I think this happened both organically and also by nature of how the program is structured. There are a lot of group projects. Plus, I loved the Global Immersions because they gave me a chance to network with my cohorts and learn about relevant topics that I am passionate about."

"MBA@UNC provides a one-of-a-kind combination of high quality and flexibility, and we are even more excited than ever that online learning—when done right—can have the same transformative power as our on-campus programs," says Dean Shackelford.

Students at MBA@UNC can use the knowledge they learn in class at their job the next day, helping them advance their careers right away.

"With MBA@UNC, I've been able to immediately apply what I've learned to my current job," says recent MBA@UNC graduate Fiona McFarland, surface warfare officer in the U.S. Navy. "My performance rankings have gone up, and I've become a much more thoughtful leader."
